2012 SoHum Beer Fest and Barbeque Smoke-Off Winners

~ The 2012 Winners Circle
~

Pictured (from left to right) are the winners of the barbeque competition at the 2012 event-John Yeend, Shamus Jennings, Melinda Unbehaun, Justin Bixby, Stan Shafer and Dutch Sullivan.

1st place went to Grateful Swine, 2nd place to Jonny Yeend and Melinda Unbehaun, and 3rd place to Shamus Jennings.

Beer winners were all homebrews, with 1st place honors going to Jimmie Ray Austin for his “Dark IPA,” 2nd place was a “Smoked IPA” entered by Dutch Sullivan, and 3rd place went to Skip McFarling for his “Obese Double IPA".

Attention anyone who’s ever been told, “This is so delicious you should enter it into a contest!!!” regarding your barbequed meat, seafood or veggies or your home brewed beer. It’s stiff competition in the backyard barbeque and home brewed beer circuit, but who knows, you may just brew the best or “make the cut” er, so to speak!

Bad puns aside, Sunday, September 1st, the Mateel Community Center in Redway will present the 5th annual SoHum Beer Fest & BBQ Smoke Off, a beer and BBQ competition with live music!

Fast becoming a favorite, summertime event in southern Humboldt, barbeque and beer lovers will agree that when grill masters, home brewers, and local breweries come together in one place to test their skills, that’s the place to be! The “job” of the audience is to taste their delectable offerings and cast your secret vote. How sweet is that? Prizes and bragging rights are awarded to audience favorites in all categories.

Those interested in being a BBQ or brew contestant should call or come by the Mateel office at 923-3368. BBQ contestants must provide their own BBQ, ingredients, and serving utensils, plus make enough of their dish to offer samplers to a crowd of about 300 people.  Home brewers must provide keg or bottled beer samples (also to a crowd of 300) and are responsible for serving their product during the event.

All BBQ and brew contestants will receive two free passes to the event in exchange for their participation, plus get the chance to win some great BBQ and beer related prizes, as well as a plaque to commemorate their victory. Winners of the BBQ competition will also receive a cash award this year to help offset the expense of their ingredients.

Doors open at 4pm and the fun starts immediately with BBQ samplers, beer tasters, and live music by Aloha Radio and Rooster McClintock. Complimentary BBQ samplers and a free plate of sides are offered to all event attendees and will be served throughout the day until gone.  Those purchasing the beer ticket will receive a commemorative tasting glass and unlimited tasters of local favorites and specialty brews by most of the breweries in Humboldt and Mendocino Counties (and a few from beyond), plus an array of offerings by local home brewers.

Schedule entertainment includes Aloha Radio with special guests Rooster McClintock...

About Aloha Radio...

"Aloha Radio could be called a SoCal surf band. But, that barely describes what they actually do. Although their style is reminiscent of ’60′s surf rock and surf pop, their sound goes beyond that. Somehow, this Orange County crew dusts off an old genre and makes it modern.”

Aloha Radio is not without their fair share of accomplishments. From being named one of Music Connection Magazine’s Top 100 Live Unsigned Bands, to performing at multiple festivals with legendary artists, to receiving a nomination for Best Surf at the 2013 OC Music Awards, this is just the beginning of Aloha Radio’s unstoppable momentum.

Known for their live performances, in one year the band played over 130 gigs including a West Coast US/Canada Tour. The energy that emanates from these four friends is like a wave colliding with the shore.

“They are not only honoring hallowed ground as so many other surf bands do; they’re adding to its glory by forging a new sound for a new generation.”  Where ever they the go, the beach party follows. - Bernard Baur, Music Connection Magazine

Rooster McClintock

Rooster McClintock came together in 2006. Its members include Jake wiegandt on lead vocals and lead guitar, Jereme Stinespring on lead vocals and rythum guitar, Paul Calovich II on harmony vocals and bass guitar and Nathan Benbow on harmony vocals and percussion.

R. McC. is Humbolt County's only honky tonk band. They have developed a reputation as a rowdy, foot stomping crowd pleaser but take pride in their ability to create a wide dynamic of sound with a variety of tunes ranging from waltz, swing, surf and moody tunes such as "Suburb Bramble" and "No Ends Met"
